A couple weeks ago, I did a two part series on Jesus calling his first disciples. He tells Simeon & Andrew "follow me and I will make you fishers of men." (emphasis mine) Part one of the series dealt with the first 2 words, "follow me." I believe that there are 3 ways we are to follow Christ. 1)Follow me is a call for us to seperate ourselves from the world. The only way Christ can get our attention is by us getting out of our environment of distractions and into his. At salvation we learn that there have to be some things we have to seperate from in order to give Christ our all. 2)Follow me means that we are to abide in Christ. This is the place where we really begin to hear the heart & passion of Christ & His will for us. If we abide in Christ, he will abide in us. We have to abide in Him in order to grow. 3)Follow me is a call for obedience. This is where the rubber meets the road. This is the step we take where we begin to trust in Him. We've set ourselves apart, heard His calling, read His Word & now putting action to it. It is through this growth process that Jesus taught His followers (us included) to be fishers of men. We have to follow Him in order to be discipled & for spiritual growth to take place. As you do, then you heed the calling to go out and fish. We'll talk about fishing in the next blog. But for now, ask yourself...Am I truly "following" Christ?
